The myth of the bicycle in Eroica Gaiole

Cycling is more than just a sport or a simple outdoor hobby. It often leads us through uncontaminated paths, far from traffic jams and routine. Immersed in nature, in city parks or on the local hills, you can get in touch with your inner "self": you really breath moments of peace.

If you are passionate about the two wheels you will probably know Eroica Gaiole, the most famous bike race in Tuscany - and more. The event takes place every year at the beginning of autumn, when the climate is ideal for riding a bike without excessive effort on the body.

This year it will be on Sunday, October 7, just when the first falling leaves paint the Chianti landscape yellow and gold. A magical atmosphere, even more on two vintage wheels. The Eroica, in fact, is not a simple race, but a classic bike race, with a combination of charm and curiosity arousing both in spectators and in participants. The routes are studied on increasing levels of difficulty to allow the participation of professionals, amateurs and families.

History of an undertaking

The Eroica of Gaiole in Chianti is run all on white roads, that is unpaved, the same where Bartali used to ride. He grew up and fell in love with the bike along the Tuscan hills. Eroica Gaiole started in 1997, but its genesis brings back to past glory: it celebrates the determination and the sacrifice of champions that made history. The heroic cycling of Bartali and Coppi, full of those noble values that from two wheels spread mutual respect and create social bonds.

Those values, typical of a genuine and popular sport, are renewed edition by edition, together with the aim of preservation of the environmental heritage. The bike race also promotes a sustainable, ecological lifestyle that cares about the world around us.

The total route is 209 km long and spreads out to the southern area of Siena, between Val d'Arbia, Val d'Orcia and the Crete Senesi. From our villa in Capovento you can easily reach the charming village of Gaiole in Chianti, the starting point and finish line of Eroica. To take part in the ride and experience the sense of freedom along these authentic lands, get yourself a historical bike, that is built before 1987, or a vintage style bike, with the characteristics of the original models. The required clothing follows the same mood: wool sweaters and shorts are welcome.

The routes of Eroica

The four possible itineraries start from the same starting point, but are of different length and level of difficulty. Riding along some of the most evocative stretches of the Tuscan countryside, between one pedaling and the other, you will catch glimpses of incredible beauty.

La leisure route is 46 km long, the simplest route to experience the “heroic” trail in about three hours. The short route – 75 km – is more challenging and offers a wonderful view of the rustic village of Radda in Chianti. The medium route (135 km) and the long route (209 km) are dedicated to the most trained cyclists and professionals: between hills and green valleys, there are climbs and slopes.
